The Connie NormanTrans Empowerment Center

A building of, by, and for trans and non-binary people — the first of its kind in the country. Eight trans-led organizations under one roof. On-site health care, peer support and recovery services, transgender support groups, a food bank, a free clothing closet, legal clinics, and community events that actually feel like community.

Everything here was built by trans people, for trans people. That's not a tagline — it's the organizational structure of the building.

Most systems trans people have had to navigate were not built with them in mind. The Connie is the exception. Eight organizations, one clinic, two clothing closets, a food bank, and a legal clinic share a single address — and most of them have been doing this work for years without the visibility they deserve.

This directory is a practical guide. Each organization has its own focus, its own community, and its own entry point. Use it to find what fits where you are right now — not where someone else thinks you should be.

A good fit if you
Want to connect with other trans and nonbinary people, access practical support in a celebratory rather than clinical environment, or need a soft landing after time away from community.
Good to know
FLUX coordinates many of the Connie's center-wide events. Their HIV pre-testing events include free services like haircuts, makeovers, and nail care — the care isn't just medical.
Unique Woman's Coalition (UWC)
The oldest trans-led org in Los Angeles — centering Black Trans culture, with extensive direct services and legal document support.
Black trans communityDirect servicesLegal docsHealing spacesWeekly support group
+
Who they're for
Black trans women and femmes, the broader Black LGBTQIA+ community, and transmasculine people. UWC operates from a Black trans cultural framework — not a general LGBTQ+ one.
What you'll find here
  • Ready 2 Wear Closet — free clothing, household and hygiene goods
  • Free binder program — sizes S to 5XL
  • Legal Documents Clinic — CA ID, birth cert, gender markers, passport, SSN, advance directive, POA
  • Melanin Magic — weekly transgender support group for Black Trans community
  • Masculine Mixer (Masc Mix) — transmasc, AFAB and nonbinary masc gathering
  • Self-defense workshops (trans/NB only, crisis advocate on site)
  • Youth Leadership program and TEA Cohort
  • TransGiving (annual) and civic engagement
A good fit if you
Are Black and trans and want community that explicitly centers your culture. Need practical help with ID documents, clothing, binders, or safety. Want peer support that doesn't feel clinical.
Good to know
The self-defense workshop is trans/NB-only with a crisis advocate present — a rare offering. The Legal Docs Clinic removes a major barrier to housing, employment, and healthcare. Binder applications are available on their website.

Healing & storytelling

Invisible Men
Uplifting AFAB transmasc, nonbinary, Two Spirit, intersex and gender-expansive people through storytelling, healing, art and advocacy.

AFAB transmasculine people, flower and femme boys, nonbinary, Two Spirit, intersex, and gender-expansive communities. People who have been erased in both trans and feminist spaces.
What you'll find here
  • Storytelling, oral history and community archive
  • Healing spaces and community gathering
  • Trans* Lounge — two ongoing peer support groups for transmasc and gender-expansive people
  • Art and creative expression
  • Leadership development
  • Advocacy in Reproductive Justice, HIV prevention and visibility
  • Community-led research
  • TransMasc Brunch (annual, with FLUX)
A good fit if you
Are transmasc, nonbinary, Two Spirit, intersex, or gender-expansive and want space that explicitly sees you. Are looking for healing through story and art rather than — or alongside — clinical care.
Good to know
Invisible Men's focus on Reproductive Justice and HIV prevention for transmasc people addresses needs that are often completely absent from standard healthcare. Trans* Lounge runs two active peer support groups — a rare dedicated space for transmasc and gender-expansive community in Los Angeles. "I Exist, We Exist" is their guiding statement.
Mirror Memoirs
National storytelling and abolitionist organizing project for LGBTQI+ survivors of color — working to end child sexual abuse.
Survivors of CSAQTIBIPOCAbolitionistStorytelling
+
Who they're for
Black and Indigenous LGBTQIA+ survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Trans and gender non-conforming people of color. Over 700 QTIBIPOC CSA survivor members. Board is entirely trans/intersex/NB/queer POC who survived CSA.
What you'll find here
  • Audio archive — one-on-one survivor interviews
  • Healing circles
  • Cohort-based leadership institutes and political education
  • Monthly Member Support Meetings
  • Abolition Book Club and film screenings
  • Transmutation: A Ceremony — theatrical healing ritual
  • Paid facilitation pathway for members
A good fit if you
Are a QTIBIPOC survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Want healing that doesn't depend on prisons, policing, or state-run psychiatric institutions. Are ready (or curious) to engage through storytelling, community, and political framework.
Good to know
Mirror Memoirs is a healing and organizing space — not a mental health provider. It works best alongside therapy, or as an entry point for people for whom clinical settings have felt unsafe. Members can be paid as workshop facilitators.

Mental health, recovery & peer support

1 organization
Rainbow Transformations Foundation (RTF)
Identity-first, trans-led peer support, bridge care, and referrals into a vetted network of TGI-competent licensed providers — for TGI people, by TGI people.
Peer supportRecovery supportBridge careProvider referralsAdvocacyTGI-ledSupport groups
+
Who they're for
Trans, gender-diverse, and intersex (TGI) people in Los Angeles County. RTF centers people who have been failed by systems that weren't built for them — especially those navigating mental health, recovery, or the gap between needing care and being able to access it.
What you'll find here
  • Peer support — one-on-one support from TGI peers with shared lived experience
  • Recovery peer support — from peers who are themselves in recovery
  • Bridge care — support while you're waiting for or between clinical appointments
  • Vetted provider referrals — into a network of independently licensed TGI-competent therapists, psychiatrists, and other providers
  • Peer support groups — RTF is actively developing transgender support groups based on what the TGI community wants to see; reach out to connect or propose a group
  • TGI competency training for licensed providers
  • Workforce pathways — moving TGI community members into licensed provider networks
  • Advocacy alongside clinical navigation
A good fit if you
Are TGI and struggling to find a therapist or provider who actually gets it. Are in recovery and want peer support from someone who has been there — not a clinical program. Are between appointments and need someone to hold the space. Want to be connected to care without having to explain yourself from scratch every time.
Good to know
RTF provides peer support — not clinical treatment. What makes it different is the foundation: shared identity. Peer support from someone who has lived a version of your experience offers something that systems built by and for others often cannot. RTF is also actively developing transgender support groups in Los Angeles — and takes its cues from the community about what's needed. If you're looking for a group that doesn't exist yet, that's a conversation worth having. RTF also works to move TGI people into licensed provider networks — building the infrastructure the community needs long-term.
